No scientific discovery in the history of mankind has been more influential on our culture and society as the development of vaccines. Vaccinations have saved millions of lives since they were first developed. It previous centuries many of the leading causes of death were infectious diseases, many of which have been almost completely eradicated by the development of effective vaccinations.
There are literally dozens of different types of vaccines, each of which attempts to protect a person from a very specific pathogen. Most vaccines work against viruses, although there are a few examples of antibacterial vaccines. Vaccines which are commonly used in the United States include influenza, shingles, chickenpox, hepatitis B, and polio. Of course, this is not a comprehensive list.
A majority of modern vaccines are quite safe for the person being vaccinated. The side effects of the vaccines will depend greatly on the specific type of vaccine which is being used. This article is not intended to be a comprehensive review of every potential side effect associated with every vaccine. Rather, it is a summary of some of the examples of side effects which can be experienced.
One side effect which most vaccines have in common is an allergic reaction to one or more of the chemicals which are contained in the vaccine. Allergic reactions can range from being very mild to extremely severe. Common symptoms of an allergic reaction will include itching, a rash, shortness of breath, and swelling of various tissues. If a person experiences signs or symptoms of an allergic reaction after receiving a vaccine, they should be taken to a doctor immediately.
One of the most common vaccinations in the United States and Europe is the annual influenza vaccine. As is the case with all vaccines, it is possible to have an allergic reaction to this vaccine. This is however, quite rare. Most people will experience will be a bit of mild status and redness at the location of the shot injection. Some experiencing minor aches and pains, and a mild fever one to two days after receiving the vaccine. This is typically not serious.
In cases, a person receiving the influenza vaccine can experience a condition known as Guillain-Barre Syndrome. This is a rare condition which causes a progressive paralysis in a person which is affected. Without proper treatment, this condition can be deadly.
