Qualities to look for in potential babysitters

There are many qualities to look for in a potential babysitter. Depending on how you family is structured, you child in general, and your schedule there may be different ways to find the right one. Plus there is safety and personality qualities that should be considered also.

All families are different in many ways. When looking for a babysitter include the whole family. Ask everyone what they would like to have in a babysitter and what their expectations are. Then come up with a list of interview questions from the notes you have from the members in your family. If it is just you, this is still possible, just write a list of things you would like and expect. Make sure you speak to multiple babysitters so that you may choose the best one for your family. Make sure that they agree with the way you discipline your child or children, that they understand your families schedule and that they are flexible.

Nevertheless, when you meet potiental babysitters have your child with you. Give them a chance to interact and pay attention to how your child is with that person. Are they a good match? Your child my be shy or outgoing and a babysitter needs to be able to deal with all possibilities.

Most important, you need to find someone that best fits into your schedule. They need to be flexible, dependable, and willing to help you out in emergency situations. This may be the hardest part in finding the right person, but if you can't find someone that can work within your schedule there is no point in finding someone. This will also require compromise and understanding from your part.

Other things to look for in a potential babysitter are safety qualities. Do they have any certifications that would benefit you and your child in case something happened? Are they trained in CPR and/or First Aid? Do they have their childcare license? These are questions that could be included in your interview. Depending on personal preference you may find someone with just what you are looking for. Another thing to consider is the rate. How much are you willing to pay for childcare? You want to make sure the rate is right for you and for them. When deciding on a rate it is always a good idea to see what some of your local daycares are charging per day. If you only need a babysitter for a few hours a day it is always nice to make the rate a little higher. Decide on your weekly, daily, or hourly rate, but keep it under daycare prices. It doesn't make since to pay a babysitter more than a daycare.

In conclusion, finding the right babysitter is not easy but if you ask questions, decide on a rate, and choose one as a family it can be made easier. The right babysitter is waiting for you! Get out there and find them.
