It seems there is no way out. We are constantly bombarded with advertisements in the printed media, on television, etc. Some of the ads read "bigger is better". Some offer to triple and double size your meal for just a few more cents. Yes, it is the Fast Food Restaurants that have infiltrated the different neigborhoods especially, the poorer sections. Without a doubt, living close to a fast food restaurant can impact your health in a huge way.
Studies have revealed that those who reside in close proximity to these Joints are more prone to a higher rate of obesity, heart attack and stroke. There is a definite correlation with the consumption of unhealthy food and serious diseases. These meals are laden with hydrogenated/saturated fats, high sodium and sugar contents. Naturally, over a period of time this will bring on the on set of hypertension, diabetes and clogged arteries. The end result, if not detected on time can utimately lead to strokes and heart attacks.
A great number of these restaurants set up business in neigborhoods where residents are already making unhealthy dietary choices. Many of these areas do not have a full-fledged store/supermarket nearby where there are fresh fruits and vegetables. Thus, residents have to travel quite a distance in order to secure same.
Fast Food Restaurants have marketing strategies to entice even children during their formative years by using cartoon characters. Children's taste buds are already formed and geared towards high sodium fries and chicken nuggets. Sometimes, before a child can even utter a sentence, he/she is able to identify one of these stores just by the logo or a cartoon character. Over the years, these reastaurants have partnered with toy markers, sports companies and the film industry to send out their message.
In recent years, the fast food industry has tried to incorporate some healthy choices in their menus like apple sauce, sliced apples, salads. However, there is gigantic room for improvement. No doubt, the industry provides job opportunities for some in the areas. There has to be a middle ground, balance is needed. Therefore, there should be a limit on the number of restaurants in a particular area. Citizens should hold their elected officials accountable.
In the meantime, we can all do our part by limiting our consumption of fast foods. If fresh vegetables and fruits are not in close proximity to home, do try to take the time and seek out same and stock up by freezing. At the same time, if we have a patch of land, perhaps, we can plant a vegetable and fruit garden or maybe a public one. If you plant it, others will come and join forces.
