socializing with peers. It has been seen as a detriment for some students to strictly be kept in the special education classroom. It is beneficial for the student to experience the social situation of the classroom with modifications to the academics.
Assessment Team
This is the group of professionals that are responsible for assessing the student. This can include the special education teacher, psychologists, classroom teachers, physical therapists, and occupational therapists.
ADA
ADA or the Americans with Disability Act is the law that doesn't allow discrimination against people with disabilities. It is through this Act that students are given the right to an equal education.
At Risk
At Risk is a term used for students that are in danger of dropping out of school. Frequently special education students are in danger of becoming At Risk students. Many frequently do not like school, are older than their peer groups and may have other issues outside of school that may cause them to want to drop out of school. The classroom teacher must be aware of these students who are At Risk.
ADHD or ADD
A frequent disability that regular classroom teachers will encounter is Attention Deficit Disorder or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. These studentsmay have problems with attention spans, are more easily distracted and may be impulsive. These behaviors may be difficult to accommodate in the regular classroom. If a student has this disability, it will be essential to work with the special education teacher for the best results.
These are a few of the common special education terms that a new teacher will come in contact with early on with a new position. Develop a good relationship with the special education instructor for a successful learning experience for the student.
