Yes, it is. I cannot say that the Internet has not brought some advantages to the educational and knowledge world. But at the same time it has brought very adverse affects to the society as a whole.
By this I mean different categories of society members are affected. Like I say, children in the past before the introduction and the affordability of the Internet and networking came into existence, used to play together in their free time, do their homework and read some more from published books. But these days they are so much engrossed in the Internet world. They play games and some (most) try to get into censored information and sites although they are minors. All this makes their thinking and mind jogging capabilities to be reduced. They also acquire morals that are not acceptable and also bad language which is not accepted by society. It affects them to the extend of lacking respect to their parents and elders in general.
The other people affected are the adults. Not all adults have the sense of using the Internet appropriately. A large percentage, especially men, just browse through adult rated sites at all hours of the day. This makes them lose focus in their work place, at home, in their relationships, and also might lead to such traumatizing incidences as violence and rape due to exposure to such kind of immoral material and information. Instead these older people should be buying and reading books that will stimulate their intelligence, knowledge capacity and wisdom. Above all it will create a sense of spending time usefully that will be beneficial to the society as a whole.
To the academic world, though information and material for research, term paperwork, assignments and general knowledge are readily available, they are not of such high quality because some are written in languages not understandable to all or the texts are not proofread to certify that the information is being portrayed as it should be. Diversification of the resources of information is so large that getting information is cumbersome for those not able to devise easier ways of searching through the huge pool of data found in the network. It is much easier to get such information through reading in published books, journals and other hard copy readable material.
Furthermore, the Internet causes many people to have eye problems which cannot be cured. This is because of staring at the screen for long hours.
Even though many can argue that the Internet has many benefits, in the long run it is affecting the whole society in a negative way, and it is hard to correct the defects it brings along with it.
