It's not strange to find yourself with not enough time to spend with your loved ones. Work and other responsibilities seem to take up most of your time, and when you have a spare moment the last thing you want to do is take the family out for a movie or on a weekend away. However, family bonding doesn't have to involve huge chunks of time, out of city breaks or you putting more strain on your life. It's the little things that make a world of difference to the bond your family creates.
Have dinner as a family, together at the table, even if it's take out, sit down and enjoy the meal together. During this time you can discuss your day and have a quick laugh. Aim to eat together at least three or four times per week. It may seem like an unimportant thing but it's integral to building your relationship with your family.
Cook dinner as a family. Get the kids involved for a bit of fun and a few laughs. Children love spending time with their parents, especially when it comes to helping in the kitchen. Prepare simple dishes that they can help with, even if it's just stirring or breaking the eggs. They will appreciate being able to do it and you will get to spend some time with them. It's a great moment to talk about the more important things in a natural and relaxing environment.
Be a good listener. Parents have a tendency to boss their children around but they never have time to listen. It's important to shut up and hear what your child or partner has to say. Don't respond straight away or think about what you're going to say as they are speaking, but really listen. If you they see that you are trying to understand their point of view and consider their opinion they will have more respect for you and will feel they can communicate with you without tension.
Have a regular family day or evening out. Once a month, decide to do something as a family, it might be something like going out to a favourite restaurant, playing a board game at home, seeing a movie or spending the day at the park. It's important to spend quality time with the people you love, especially when you want to bond with your family.
Try new things together. That way you are all learning at the same time. It doesn't always have to be the parents teaching the children, there are many things children can teach parents. Try a new sport or buy a new boardgames no one has played before, or visit a town that none of you have been in. Enjoy the learning experience together.
We usually only have one family and it's important that this family bonds. You want a healthy relationship with the people you love and so it's important to make time for them, even if it's just a little bit during the day.
