Overcoming anxiety

At the FOB's, medics are the first line of defense for anxiety relief. If the symptoms are not manageable, the medical providers consult with COSC for additional support. The negative stigma of visiting a medic is not as high as visiting a mental health provider so it is an easy avenue for Soldiers seek assistance. COSC took advantage of this avenue by intrusting medics regarding the Basic Fundamentals of Relaxation while visiting FOB's. Basic Fundamentals of Relaxations is now an additional tool in the aid bags of some medics.


Basic Fundamental of Relaxation can be taught and applied in any environment in less than 30 minutes. Although there was no specific method of introducing the four fundamentals, I found the method below most helpful. I t allowed me to remain on task.
When introducing the concepts, discuss and practice the relaxation fundamentals with the patient. After the discussion, ask them to count their pulse for one minute while keeping time. Discuss and most importantly practice the four fundamentals: breathing control, aim, steady position, and trigger squeeze.

Breathing Control
Directions: Breath in the nose for a count of seven seconds, hold for one second, and release from the mouth for a count of seven seconds; hold for one second and repeat the cycle. The breaths should be slow and deep. They should be generated from the diaphragm and fill the entire set of lungs.
Tip: If seven seconds is too long modify to six seconds.
Breathing control is about the slow rhythm not necessarily to time. Where the body goes, the mind will follow. So, one goal of this fundamental is to force the body to slow down.
Aim
Directions: Thing about the number "1" and if your mind drifts, start over and think about the number "2", and if your mind drifts, start over and think about the next number.
Remember the goal is to keep the lowest number possible. Focus the Mind for at least five minutes. This fundamental is mastered when you keep your mind on the number one for at least five minutes. Once it is mastered, extend the time.
Variations: Letters can be used instead of numbers.
Tip: The more fantastic the number is, it easier it is to stick with it. What color is it? What does it look like upside-down?
Aim is all about the focus of the mind and slowing down. One goal of the aim fundamental is bring individual in the here-and-now. So often our worries are focused on past regrets or future predictions. One fact remain, we can only
