Excerpt from Candy Land

John Darcy fiddled with the radio in the rented van until his frustration at not finding anything good to listen to, compelled him to light a cigarette. He had discovered that this piece of crap van didn't have a built-in lighter. Two miles out of the airport, he stopped at a gas station to buy a cheap lighter and a candy bar. It was a whole new world to him. On tour, he never drove, bought his own food or even his cigarettes. He was still in shock as he drove off, that the lighter and candy had cost $4 and change. Freakin' towel-head bastards are bleeding people dry.

The tour was over and he was dead. Though he was a young man he felt 40. His life was a perpetual hangover, he ached and his wife of only 2 years had left him with their 3-year old son.

Cherokee was a striking girl; she really looked like a Native American with her long nose, big, black button eyes and straight waist-length dark hair.

He tried to take her on the road with him fitting out a camper with every possible convenience. But she hated it. She could never find anything that she wanted to eat, she said the showbiz life was draining her energy and the roadies, and the whole band for that matter, were drunken pigs. Maybe they were, but a guy is entitled to a few drinks after ripping out his heart and displaying it for the whole world to see. The operation for replacing your heart back into your body, required alcohol. It was a sterilizing agent.

Cherokee was bewitching. For three months, there was nothing but hot sex and silly lover's talk between them. When she pulled out her magic crystals and Tarot cards, Johnny smiled and listened to the bullshit and drank red wine, thinking of when he would be having her again.

Then she got pregnant and little Levi came into the world.

All the stars in the night sky, portents and Royal Arcana's said that this would be a special child. She insisted on leaving the road and taking up with a spiritual center somewhere in New Mexico. At $10,000 per month, Johnny fumed. It sure wasn't coming out of her pocket. In fact, buckskin dresses didn't even have pockets, at least hers didn't.

They had grown to hate each other. Johnny thought she was a complete phony with all her New Age crap. Hell, she wasn't even Native American. She was Greek and Italian. You know what her real name was? Agnes Ann! Johnny Darcy wasn't his real name either, but the record company made him change
