We are less then a spec compared to Heaven and God. The reason we cannot earn heaven as a reward is because we do not deserve it. Even if we lived as best we could, and loved and worshiped God our whole life, we still would not deserve going to heaven. But because God knows what's best, and he is perfect, he lets us into heaven for worship and love.
"Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven,"
-Matthew 5:11-12
Even though we do not deserve it, it is still a reward for what we have done. A reward is something we earn by performing well in a certain way, whatever that may be. Having God in your life is the most important thing in this life.
"Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned"
-Mark 16:16
Everybody in the world are sinners, and we have all given into temptation. Jesus was the only human that lived that was tempted in every way we are, but he never gave into those temptations. We are all sinners, but Jesus made it easy for us to get to heaven. You must love God your whole life while continuing to move your relationship further with him. The process is simple, and the reward is great. It is a reward we get, but for a small price. But our sins are so great, and we are not worthy of heaven, or even to speak to God. If we were worthy we would be perfect in the eyes of the lord, and without sin.
"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him"
John 3:16-17
"If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must master it."
-Genesis 4:7
God has so much power that we can not grasp it. Heaven is so great that we do not deserve it. In the end we are far from deserving any of it. Unbelievers will sin, and not repent, and they will live in hell. Believers will sin, but we will repent and try to correct ourselves next time, and we will go heaven. God has given us a choice in life, choosing to earn heaven, or choosing to deserve hell.
