Disc Golf is a fantastic sport, and is one of the World's fastest growing pastimes. Invented in the 1970's by "Steady" Ed Hedrick, this game has grown into an International Sport, with courses and players all over the World. The sport has gained so much popularity, that it has recently been added as a feature on Tiger Woods 2010 on the Wii, as well as Wii Sports Resort.

Disc Golf Resources:

Disc Golf Course Review (dgcoursereview.com): This is an outstanding site for finding courses nearby, with independent reviews by disc golfers. In addition, this site features the largest disc golf community and a very active message board section to help with meeting folks, learning techniques and getting information on leagues, tournaments and the like.

Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA.COM): The official governing body for professional disc golf.

Disc Golf Review (discgolfreview.com): A site that features a ton of disc and equipment reviews, as well as instructional videos on throwing techniques.

Playing the Game:

Disc Golf is played on a course featuring a tee pad (could be dirt, carpet, concrete, brick or mulch) and a target (mostly baskets with chains, but some courses feature poles and/or objects like marked trees). Your object is to tee off from the tee pad and get your disc into the target/basket in the least amount of throws.

Penalty strokes may be assessed if you land on an "out of bounds area" , such as a path, roadway, stream/pond, or parking lot. Out of bounds is usually marked on the tee sign and in some cases by stakes or flags on the course.

In addition, you may be required to throw your disc around a mandatory (mando) obstacle, such as to the right or left of a tree. If you miss the mando, you are required to throw your next toss from a drop zone, usually located behind the mando and be assessed a one stroke penalty. For example, if you teed off, missed a mando, but then made it into the basket from the drop zone on your next throw, your score would be a 3 on that hole.

All holes have a Par, ranging from Par 3 to Par 5, and are measured in feet rather than yards, as in ball golf. Many players "play threes", meaning they don't abide by a courses "marked" par, but assume all holes have a Par of 3. Your total number of tosses determines your final score, and is used to determine standing in league or tournament competitive play.

Many courses feature alternative tees and alternative basket placements, which can add more difficulty
