We all like fresh carpets. However, the store bought carpet freshening powders are full of chemicals that aren't good for the environment, our health, the health of our friends and family members, or even our pets. You can make your own inexpensive and earth friendly carpet freshening powder. It doesn't even take much work.

Baking Soda.

Baking soda is a great carpet freshening powder. It helps absorb odors and leaves the carpet smelling fresh and clean. You can even uses it all by itself. It will leave the carpet fresh.

Adding Fragrance.

Because most of us like more then just fresh carpet, you have a few options for making a good smelling carpet freshening powder. You can mix cinnamon or other spice in with your baking soda. Make sure you keep the color light. This will leave a fresh scent that will remind you of baking. If that isn't your thing, you can purchase essential oils in all your favorite scents. These are derived from plant materials and are therefore all natural. Add a few drops to your baking soda and mix well with a fork or run it through a sieve to mix it up. Make sure there are no lumps.

To Use.

Whether you have a mix that has a great fragrance or you are just using baking soda you will want to sprinkle it on the carpet and let it sit for awhile. It is best if you don't walk on it a lot because this pushes the powder down farther into the carpet weave and most vacuums don't have the power to suck it up. After an hour or two (or over night if you wish) vacuum the powder up and enjoy the fresh smelling carpets.

Warning.

While this is a great way to freshen your carpet and will leave it smelling wonderful, it isn't very good for your carpet (no freshening powder is). This is because the powder gets under the weave and wears on the weave of the carpet. Most vacuums aren't strong enough to clean all of the powder up either. So, it is best that you use this carpet freshening method only every now and again.

Alternative.

Carpet freshening powder does a great job and can be used every now and again or every few months, but it isn't a regular use type of product. As an alternative you can make your own carpet freshening spray. To do that get a spray bottle (a new one and not a washed reused one) and mix 1/2 water with 1/2 alcohol. Rubbing alcohol will work though it isn't all natural. If you want an all natural product then choose a high proof white liquor such as vodka. Add your favorite essential oil and allow to sit for 24 hours. Shake well and spray down the carpet. It will smell of alcohol at first but as this dries it will leave behind the fragrance of your choice. It should be noted that it dries quickly and kills most germs. This can be used as often as desired.

Fresh carpets are certainly something we all desire. Choosing to make your own products is also a great way to make sure that you aren't harming the environment or those who come in contact with your carpets. These products are easy to make and perfect for getting the job done.
