Novel excerpts: A second chance at love

Mitch was working at the Library, a job he had held for over three years, when he looked up and saw a girl he hadn't seen before. This first encounter turned into one of those moments he would never forget, like a surreal dream burned into his memory forever.

She was rising from a squat position, lifting a stack of books up to set them on a push cart. She wore a loose pair of jeans and a simple, white tee shirt. She was tall and lean with petite shoulders, a beautiful curve to her hip and long legs. She had long, black hair that flowed across those delicate shoulders.

Mitch was in love immediately, but his mind put his heart in check just as fast as it had begun to flutter.

"There is no way I am getting mixed up in this," he told himself.

All Mitch could think about was his past experiences. More than anything in the world, he wanted to go talk to this angel that had crossed his path, but he figured she probably had a boyfriend already, but wouldn't tell him. Maybe she would not have a boyfriend, would say yes to a dinner invitation then make some excuse at the last minute. Better yet, she might actually go on one or two dates with him only to tell him she really doesn't like him. Mitch had heard and seen it all and he had had enough of it.

His friends and family had begged him to start dating again, but more and more he was convinced that Sarah had been his soul mate and that was that. When Sarah died in a car crash four years ago, Mitch's one true love had left him. No woman could measure up.

The weeks went by and Mitch had not stopped thinking about this new girl at work. He had found out by then that her name was Savannah. She was easily the most beautiful thing he had ever seen in his life, prettier than Sarah, but he was sure she wouldn't be half the person Sarah had been.

Call it fate, destiny or divine intervention, but there are times in life that outer forces seem to take over and circumvent the best laid plans. This turned out to be one of those times for Mitch.

First, it was the day he saw Savannah crying: Mitch was working the main desk at the library on a hot August afternoon. He looked up for a moment and saw Savannah crossing the lobby with tears in her eyes. Something about those tears made her eyes sparkle like diamonds and she looked so gorgeous. Mitch felt compelled to go after her to find out if she was ok.

"This is so embarrassing," said Savannah as Mitch approached her. "I feel
