Things to know before you go charter fishing

Charter fishing can be anything from an hour's fishing in the ocean near to the boat's home harbour, to a full day's worth of boating from historically proven geographic spot after spot, with the crew looking for the best possible catches for their paying customers. Word of mouth is one of the best ways of advertising for charter fishing organizations, therefore making the customer's fishing experience the best that they have ever had the crew's second most important task, behind customer safety. In order to make your saltwater fishing experience the best possible, there are some things you need to know before you go charter fishing.

The captains who have fished the area since they were children, preferrably using an inherited fishing charter license, are the best fishermen to go along with for a deep sea fishing charter. These salty old sea dogs know what fish to go after at each time of day, with weather and water temperature playing a role in where the charter will be going. Having a crew that knows where there are trophy-sized fish available, and in large quantities too, on any given day of the season will make a charter fishing organization quite successful. If you want to fish for tuna, for instance, the boat may have to travel for more than an hour before dropping a single fishing line into the water.

First and foremost, you must learn whether or not the fishing charter supplies the fishing tackle, or if you need to bring your own. If you are going deep-sea fishing, and it is not something that would be a regular event for you, purchasing a new saltwater rod and reel set, along with the tackle for one fishing trip may add a lot of money to the final bill. Some fishing charters will use hand lines when they take their clients out fishing, as they try to preserve some semblence of history within their organization. Most of these crews will have lightweight wooden boats, as opposed to the bigger fiberglass boats owned or leased by the bigger and older organizations. Some charters will have their own wet weather gear for customers, and others may not, so knowing in advance what your charter provides allows you to bring the proper gear and clothes, which would likely be better than the gear supplied by the charter.

All boats supply life vests, but if you want a really good, comfotable, lightweight one, bring your own.
