The truth of the matter is that luggage never really does get ''lost'' in transit. Sometimes it just gets left behind. Many people will get worried about the status of their luggage once it does not come off the plane, but travellers have to realise that they need to sort out mislaid luggage then and there.
Remember never to book a transit fight or indirect flight less than 2 hours before time, luggage can get lost once the passenger of the plane boards a connecting flight. The luggage will be returned to the owner, but it causes more an inconvenience than anything else. In the unlikely case of the airline losing a passenger's luggage, the passenger will be compensated for this by the airline, but even this takes time, and of course this can be frustrating.
Losing luggage while on holiday or on a train or some other means of public transport does lead to some problems. If the person or people on board that public transport do not know to whom the luggage belongs, then the luggage will be destroyed, as all luggage left unattended due to past terrorism attacks will be destroyed. This is for the safety of the public as any unidentified luggage has to be treated as a threat (bomb), Therefore all travellers should keep an eye on their luggage, and never leave anything unattended, as this could cause problems. Security in any public place will keep an eye on unattended luggage as it tends to cause unnecessary alarms. There are even signs in most underground stations and airports about people needing to keep all luggage close to them, as any luggage left unattended will be destroyed.
Coming back to airlines, people need to also keep an eye on thieves operating in the area, as they do look for people that they can take for a ride. This happens, and everyone needs to be vigilant when dealing with luggage. Many people flying have become victims to the fact that they do not keep a watch on their luggage while on the plane and they end up having valuable luggage stolen. This also does not sit well, but security measures are in place.
Lost luggage does present a problem. It stresses the travellers out, and also the people working at a help or lost baggage office. Most airlines have a reference number and hot line for lost baggage. Lost baggage is a problem, and many people end up losing more than a few insignificant clothes. The problem arises when they have some important documentation on board like passports, and papers, that allow them entry into one or more countries.
