Believe it or not, Flag Day is an official Legal holiday within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, within the United States of America. Everywhere else within the Country Flag Day is informally observed on June 14th each year. For your information Betsy Ross is believed to be the person who first designed our Nation's flag and she lived in Pennsylvania.
June 14thof the year 1777 is the date when the Continental Congress officially adopted the American Flag as the symbol of the new Nation. Back in 1885, a school teacher from the State of Wisconsin, Bernard Cigrand is believed to be the first person to begin the first annual celebration of the event with his students within Stony Hill High School. He was an outspoken supporter of a Flag Birthday and gave many speeches and wrote several articles that were published in support of his belief.
I wonder why it took so long to for the people within our Nation to celebrate the adoption of our Nation's flag. Then again, I suppose that it was and is only customary for every Nation on Earth to have a universally recognized symbol of its being, as does every other sovereign Nation that I know of on Earth.
Be that as it may, President Woodrow Wilson the first President of the United States of America to proclaim the first nation wide Flag Day in 1916. However, as early as 1891 many State and Local Governments observed Flag Day by displaying the American Flag on their Public Buildings on that particular day each year.
Back in 1947 President Harry Truman signed legislation that requested that Flag Day be celebrated on an annual basis. Flag Day still is not a National Holiday but remains just an informal day of celebration, with the exception of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
These days, the American Flag if flown on most, if not all, Public Buildings every day. It serves as a constant reminder of what it means to be a citizen of the United States of America and the struggle of its people to maintain and promote a Democratic form of Government within a, so called, free society where every legal citizen within the United States of America is free to become successful in his or her chosen occupation and in an honest manner.
Never mind that it took 87 years to abolish slavery. More than 200 years after the creation of our Nation the struggle for equality and the end of discrimination still appears to be an ongoing struggle. Who did you vote for in 2008?
