All parents require the services of a babysitter from time to time, and it is essential that you choose one that both you and your child will feel comfortable and secure with. You must be assured that any potential babysitter will provide the highest quality of care for your child, and that he or she not only has the necessary experience for the job, but a genuine love for children as well. Therefore, there are several qualities you should take into consideration when deciding upon the most qualified babysitter for your child.
~ Experience.
While it is usually not a problem to leave your older child with a teenage babysitter, it is far better to choose a babysitter for an infant who has experience caring for very young children. Ideally, the best babysitters to choose for an infant are women who have had children themselves, and who are aware of everything that the proper care of a baby entails.
~ Love for children.
It is of prime importance that the babysitter you choose truly loves children. You will feel at ease when you know that you are leaving your precious child with an individual who genuinely enjoys the company of children, and who will do his or her very best to treat your child with patience, love, and respect.
~ Training.
Another area of importance in deciding upon a babysitter is whether or not the person is trained in first aid and CPR. Especially where infants are concerned, the peace of mind which comes from knowing that your babysitter can handle basic medical emergencies will allow you to leave the house without overwhelming worry and concern for your child's safety.
~ Patience.
Typically, individuals who love children are extremely patient with them as well. One of the greatest fears that parents face in leaving their innocent baby with a sitter is that the child will be harmed or abused due to a lack of patience on the part of the babysitter. Unfortunately, far too many parents have discovered through the use of nanny-cams that this is indeed a valid fear. Therefore, you must have the assurance that the person you are hiring will be patient, gentle, and compassionate with your child.
~ Trustworthiness.
Whenever you bring another person into your home who will be there unsupervised for an extended period of time, you run the risk of your material possessions being stolen. The last issue that you want to have to deal with in terms of a babysitter is theft. Therefore, be as certain as you can be that the person you choose is not someone who would engage in this type of behavior. Since it is quite difficult to determine with accuracy if a person would steal from you, you will have to trust your instincts, and at the very least, keep your valuables out of sight or locked away safely.
~ Willingness to go above and beyond.
The ideal babysitter will possess all of the qualities mentioned above, and will also be willing to go above and beyond what is expected. Choose a sitter who will not only provide basic care for your child, but who will also play with him or her, and be willing to engage your child in fun and interesting activities, such as outings, crafts, and the like. You want a babysitter who will be attentive to your child's needs, and who will avoid simply being there to watch television or talk on the phone.
All in all, choosing the ideal babysitter for your child requires a great deal of consideration on your part. It is a decision that must be made wisely, and not taken lightly. After all, your child deserves to receive the same level of care from a sitter as he or she receives on a daily basis from you.
