Communication is the key to overcoming obstacles because the lack of communication interferes with progress. Communication as it is described by Webster is "a process by which information is exchanged between individuals through a common system of symbols, signs, or behavior" the definition makes the process of communicating sound very simple when, in fact, some individuals find it difficult to connect one syllable much less expressing the entire thought. It is the communication of ideas or thoughts that provide solutions to everyday issues or conflicts.
Yet, some believe if they ignore a particular obstacle it will go away. On the contrary, ignoring the obstacle will trigger the other party to become frustrated producing an obstacle of misunderstandings. Communication among individuals promotes an understanding of learning what the other might be thinking. Imagine if you will, what would happen if a teacher failed to inform the students that they are doing the lessons incorrectly. After receiving an undesirable grade, the students will become frustrated and the lesson would go unlearned, thus stalling progress. This same scenario holds true for parents and children. In order to learn we must teach, to teach is to communicate.
With its many cultrual differences communication in the workplace can be a challenge. Some may be unwilling to participate or concerned they may offend someone. Some may fear they may be evading a person space or territory, as a result, people tend to curtail the communication. For instance; co-worker A asked if he could help with a particular project, meanwhile, co-worker B the person responsible for the project becomes agitated and views the offer as an insult, leading her to speculate that co-worker A thinks she is incapable of doing the project or worst worried she is being replaced. Instead of thanking co-worker A for the offer and sharing the project; co-worker B has become offended and alienates the project from co-worker A. Perception is a natural human reaction; however, a person perception without the benefit communicating can create obstacles. To overcome the obstacles both co-worker A and B should communicate the issue otherwise this obstacle will lead to other obstacles and ultimately the project will suffer.
Communicating holds the key to overcoming obstacles. Hence, when you find yourself in a board meeting, in a class room, or visiting with your children remember these key elements of communication tactfully express yourself, ask questions, answer questions, and never assume. Following these key elements will help overcome obstacles and perhaps progress will resume.
