How consistency is important in relationships

Man is a social animal and humans live in this world purely based on the bonds of relationships established with others in varying equations. A person has multiple roles of relationships to play - child to the parents, brother/ sister to siblings, wife/ husband to the spouse, father/ mother to children, boss/ colleaue / subordinate at workplace and so on.

People mostly accept you based on what type of person you are in socializing: introvert or extrovert. Extroverts get related to many easily where as introverts are not. But it does not mean that introverts are not liked by many. Thus being extravert or introvert is not really too important in relationships, but consistency in one's behavior is definitely important for healthy and trustworthy relationship in the society.

What makes one to be inconsistent in one's behavior and how does such a character affect one's relationship with others? Let us analyze some of them.

== Inconsistent Moods ==

This is a widely prevalent characteristic that you can observe in many, and more so amongst women.

I know a relative of mine, who at times will welcome me with open hands when I visit his place, talk jovially, cut jokes and see me off at the gate when I depart. In other occasions, the same person will just nod his head gloomily when I arrive at his house, will retire to his bed room leaving his wife and children to give me company and will nod his head from his bed when I bid good bye!

His wife, embarrassed by his behavior, would try to make me at ease with some reasons like "he is upset; some problem at his office; he is generally moody, you know".

It is easier to tackle moody persons provided you know the person for long, and his moody behavior is well known to you. Depending on your closeness with him in relationship, you can brush aside his occasional gloomy behavior and you need not feel offended. But that will not be the case with persons whom you don't know too well, but whose relationship has some importance for you. You will get confused. You will feel offended. You may even form a bad opinion about the person who might be basically a good and nice person.

You can learn a lesson from such persons. Whatever be the external circumstances that can make you gloomy, do not express your inconsistently through your mood swings to those who are not too close to you. "Blow hot - blow cold" behavior can spoil potential good relationship with new acquaintances.

== Pre-menstrual syndrome in women ==

Women's mood generally turns inconsistent during the arrival of their monthly periods. This is known as PMS - pre-menstrual syndrome. Women get irritable, quarrelsome, shed tears profusely for petty reasons and get worked up on non-issues. Husbands, who are familiar with PMS should be more patient, accommodative and forgiving during this period. Once the periods are over, they know there will be an unusual shower of love on the cards!

== Calculative and intentional inconsistent behavior ==

You will find this quality in people in power and authority. Extremely selfish people who are quite manipulative in maneuvering things to suit their convenience will display this behavior. Guileless people, who love good relationship based on love and give, will get shocked by such behavior. It is not always good to move very close with such people. It is better to keep a safe distance from them, at the same time not losing cordiality, if you have any important business and personal dealings with them.

In relationships, mostly it is impossible to alter other's behavior towards us. But if we are shrewd, we can observe what is inconsistent in others' behavior, learn from their mistakes and set right our own behavioral characteristics.
