Are you buying a new computer? Is the high price of computer equipment overwhelming you?
Most of us are on tight budgets these days, and it can be hard to find the money for a new computer in this economic climate. Here are a few tips on getting the "most computer for your money".
1) SHOP AROUND
You might think this is obvious, but shopping around has never been more important! Many people feel like they need the very latest, fastest computer that has the most extras. Ask computer-savvy friends or post on message boards to ask for advice on a computer that will suit your needs. You don't need a super-fast processor and huge hard drive if all you use your computer for is email and word processing.
When it comes time to buy the computer you want, shop in computer stores, look online, and check discount electronics retailers. You can often find the same model for a much better price if you look hard enough. Don't be in a rush to buy - this is how salespeople snag the most gullible people into buying "now".
2) INSTALL IT YOURSELF
Rather than paying more to have software installed and buying all the latest packages of software, consider alternatives. A scaled down computer is a much better choice; you can then install your own freeware and save a bundle of money on the computer and the software!
Some examples:
-Free antivirus protection and firewall
-Free games
-Free word processing, spreadsheet, presentation and publication software
-Free graphic design utility
Mac, Windows, and Linux systems all have freeware available, and even sites devoted specifically to freeware for them. Rather than paying a premium for the latest version of Microsoft Office, save $150 to $500 (depending on the version you choose) and download Open Office for free instead. Hold off purchasing Photoshop CS4 for $700-$1,000 and try Paint.NET or GIMP for free instead. You'll find most of the same functionality available for a much better price - nothing at all!
3) AVOID EXTENDED WARRANTIES
Many computer retailers offer some kind of extended warranty, which is supposed to save you a bundle of money on repairs. Consider the fact that most computers actually come with a good warranty that will cover most computer problems. Also, most issues will crop up very early, when this warranty is still in effect, or much later, when it's probably cheaper just to buy a new computer. Back up all your files on a regular basis and carefully consider whether an extended warranty is worth it. Instead, consider purchasing the computer on a credit card that doubles your warranty as some do, or hold off an extended warranty altogether.
Always look for a computer that fits what you need, and don't be in a terrible rush to get a new computer. Take your time and follow these tips, and you can save a lot of money!
