Lets get real people...
I want to start off with a little comparison.
Cuil.com's services: *sexy looking, "all encompassing" search engine
Google's services: *optimized search engine, gmail, blogger, orkut, open source development of all kinds, ie Android; google Voice, google docs, gtalk, reader, desktop search, chrome, picasa, google finance, google health, GOOG-411, patents, youtube and google video, sketchup, knol and translate
That was just to name a few that I know of.
There is no question of whether or not Cuil.com would ever post a threat to Google. It's taken Google tons of time and money to get where they are now. By the time Cuil catches up, Google would be so much further. Google doesn't develop all of this just for fun either. They are investing in possible sources of income. It may be free to us, but nowhere near free to the advertisers.
I'd also like to let you in on what could be one of their amazing ideas.
Google Android, an open source mobile operating system, was releasted late in 2008. It has come a long way, but it is still nowhere near finished, even though it has beat out Apple's iPhone at pushing out features only 8 months after being released. But here's to put it in perspective. There are currently about 4 billion cell phone subscribers worldwide. A massive market. Google's Android OS on the G1 has met its 1 million user mark pretty quickly, and Google plans on keeping it growing faster.
With one of the fastest growing mobile OS's (the fastest of the Open Source platforms), Google plans on further developing Android until it has one of the largest shares of the smartphone market (hopefully larger than RIM). (On a side note, Google's current Android development has flash player, it's in alpha stage and very functional, I loved using it) As Google takes the market, Google plans on expanding on it by offering free mobile phone and data services. All of it. Free. In return, you just watch their advertising. With 4 billion devices currently in use and a gradual movement to changing all 4 billion into smart-phones, Google has tons to gain from Android, just as we do.
Google, a search engine company with enough momentum to try and ravage the mobile phone industry, doesn't even need to glance Cuil.com's way. Google still has the majority of the world's market share. Yes, globally. In February, Google held 72% in the US while Cuil.com wasn't even mentioned (Hitwise).
And simply by holding the majority, other companies can't compete, especially Cuil. Dominated markets are resistant to change.
For example, Microsoft holds 94% of the global market share. How could Apple possibly beat Microsoft? Build a better OS? Better Software? Better Hardware? Apple does have all three. Apple is better, but it can't touch Microsoft's market share.
Thus, Google need not worry about Cuil.com. Even though I like it, it is a nobody and always will be.
