Dune is one of the most popular series in science fiction taking place in a galactic empire the story takes place nearly entirely on the world of dune, a desert world that is important because it is the only place where one can get Melange spice. Melange spice is important because it allows for longer lifespan, and heightened awareness as well as allowing some people to see the future which allows for safe space travel.
The galaxy is controlled by a series of families. The Atreides family have come to dune because of a clash between the families. Controlling Dune will allow them a great deal of power, but before they can gain firm control they are attacked. Paul Atreides escapes into the desert.
There are 5 other books written by Frank Herbert each of them jumping forward in time.
Dune Messiah takes place only twelve years in which Paul has become Emperor after conquering most of humanity in a jihad but while he is a powerful emperor he is unable to stop the war itself. The third book children of Dune follows the two children of Paul Atreides. These children have the same visions of the future as their father and many of the same struggles as they try to rule over the empire and control the guilds and organizations that hold nearly as much sway as the emperor.
"God Emperor of Dune" skips forward 3500 years. Having become the sandworm Leto II has ruled the empire for those years, yet he sees that humanity cannot be dominated by a single person even himself and has spent much of that time trying to ensure that no one person will rule humanity again.
The fifth book is "Heretics of Dune" takes place 1500 years after Leto II's reign has ended. Thanks to his reign humanity has scattered across the stars but now they are beginning to return bent on conquest.
The final book of the Dune series is "Chapterhouse Dune" the Honored Matres have nearly conquered the old empire and only the Bene Gesserite are left to stop them.
A detailed and interesting story, often it is the planet Dune and the families or even the empire that become the major players in these stories and while individuals actions matter it is the world of Dune that is often the main character. One of the most popular science fiction series in history it has sold millions of copies and still fascinates many. The stories of dune are epic fantasy at its best and anyone who like science fiction should give this series a chance.
