Writing can be a gift in many ways. For one, it is a way to express a person's ideas. This is helpful to many different types of people. For the introvert who cannot seem to peacefully speak their mind in public, it allows them to fully open up and let everyone interested hear them.
For other people, simply writing something down in a word processor can be a mode of release. Similar to telling a friend something that has just happened in real life, writing allows for the stress and anxieties of situations to be typed away. More importantly, and even more similar to real life, the reaction isn't always significant. What is important is the fact that someone (or something, in the case of a word processor) is listening.
Writing is of course also a gift because unlike many other fields, a person doesn't need a multitude of skills besides a way to get the words down and a creative mind. Simply being able to express ideas on paper and in speech is enough to get a point across and have people appreciate it, and that alone is alluring for many people.
In addition, writing gets better as it is developed. That is, the more a person writes, the more easily they are able to project their thoughts. Also, the confidence one receives from writing a good piece can be astounding. A lot of people who are extremely skilled in certain professions or subjects can't for the life of them write well. Therefore, for those who can write proficiently, a lot of poise is available to be had.
Moreover, writing functions as a method for a person to make themselves known to the world. In comparison to people who work in certain day jobs that are very important to society, they, unlike writers, may never have a chance to be fully appreciated or have their thoughts heard. Blogging, and even websites here like Helium give that possibility to writers.
Finally, writing can be very rewarding. When someone reads something that a person wrote and has praise, it is a wonderful feeling. Writing is also a gift because it serves not only as a field of its own, but as an excellent compliment to other fields that a person may be interested in.
In contrast, writing can definitely be a curse. To start, there is the problem of criticism. Now, while criticism is often the best way to improve a person's writing and helps to develop the skills that they need, it is also one of the worst aspects. A true double-edged sword, criticism is viewed by many as an insult to their work, and that alone makes writing
