Zoo reviews: Henry Doorly Zoo, Omaha, NE

Omaha's premier tourist attraction, the Henry Doorly Zoo, located at 3701 S 10th Street and open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., traces its history back to its founding by the City of Omaha as Riverview Park in 1894. In the more than one hundred years since then Riverview Park has experienced a wealth of improvements. Margaret Hitchcock Doorly's donation of $750,000 to the Zoo in 1963 changed the name of the Zoo to memorialize her late husband Henry Doorly, former chairman of the World Publishing Company. The name is not the only thing that has changed at Henry Doorly, which now features such attractions as the Lied Jungle, Scott Aquarium, Lozier IMAX Theater, Desert Dome and the newest addition, the Butterfly/Insect Pavilion.

The Lied Jungle, the world's largest indoor rain forest, opened in June 1992. In 1994, Family Life Magazine named the Lied Jungle the single best zoo exhibit in the country. This exhibit covers 1.5 acres and is 80 feet tall. Visitors experience the jungle first hand in this total immersion exhibit where guests can see touch, smell, hear, and become part of the natural rainforest environment while watching animals that are roaming free or behind water and rock barriers. The Lied Jungle features Asian, African, and South American rainforest areas as well as Educational Facilities and Durham's TreeTops restaurant.

The Scott Aquarium opened on April 1, 1995 with a $16 million price tag. Displays of aquatic habitats from Polar Regions, temperate oceans, coral reefs and the Amazon are featured in the Aquarium. Some of the main attractions are the Penguins and Puffins. Antarctic penguins can be seen through a 60 foot long and 25 foot high window above and below water. The Shark Tunnel takes visitors through a 70 foot long, zigzag acrylic tunnel at the bottom of a 17 foot exhibit. The aquarium holds over 900,000 gallons of circulating salt water, large sharks, sting rays and a variety of other fish living amongst the coral heads, canyons and caves. A giant Pacific octopus, cold water anemones, colorful fish and invertebrates can be seen in additional exhibits before guests find their way to the nautical gift shop as they exit the aquarium.

The Lozar IMAX Theater opened in March 27, 1997. The IMAX screen is 83 feet wide and 61 feet tall. The theater seats 358 viewers for 2D films and 324 viewers for 3D and is showing Under the Sea 3D and Wild Ocean 3D in 2009.

The Desert Dome, the world's largest indoor desert, cost $31.5 million,
