Do hauntings really happen?

Look at the number of supernatural-related television shows that have captured audiences in recent years. While many individuals profess not to believe in poltergeists, the popularity of such television programs indicate otherwise. I never would have understood that hauntings really do happen, if I had not purchased and moved into a possessed house. Before that, I had been skeptical when someone spoke about a poltergeist-type of experience having occurred in their home. Now, you'd better believe, that I am a firm believer. Here are some reasons.

We moved into our house on a weekend. One night during that first week, when my husband and I went to bed, from the attic above our room, we heard heavy footsteps stamping back and forth the entire length of the room. The pacing continued for quite some time. We knew nobody was in the attic and I was freaking out. Every night for a couple weeks, this same routine occurred. I wanted to move, but we couldn't afford to do so, not having just mortgaged the house.

The next happening was one day after I'd put our children down for a nap in their upstairs bedrooms. I rested on the sofa in the living room. From around the corner in the hallway, I could hear what sounded like a heavy panting, as if someone had run a race and was totally out of breath. When I got up to take a look, nothing was there; so I resumed my rest. Once again, the panting sound. This, too, went on daily for a period of time.

While I never personally saw the ghost, my then eight-year-old daughter did. She awoke from her nap one day stating she had seen a man walking up the stairs but "I could see right through him," she explained. We told her she it had been a dream, and she accepted that explanation, but we knew otherwise. My husband and I had thought it best not to share our ghost stories with our children, since we preferred that they would be able to fall asleep without any more fears than youngsters already carry to bed.

How could I not believe that the ghost wanted us to move out. It would haunt us for a week or two at a time, then give up for about three months, when it would attempt a new technique.

The best story took place after we had the front stoop to the house replaced. The mason complained about how poorly the original concrete had been laid. He was unaware that the original owner was the builder, who had done that work himself. Anyway, that evening my husband took our family out to dinner. Because I was very pregnant,
