If the premise of this article is, "Can these two disciplines become less polarized?," well perhaps the answer lies somewhere betwixt and between politics, and power of humankind's need for a belief in salvation. It was Karl Marx who's quote comes to mind which is so profound in it's insight into religious dogma in this author's beliefs; "Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world, just as it is the spirit of a spiritless situation. It is the opium of the people." Religion's nature and purpose are so diametrically opposed to sciences', that it is hard to reconcile the two.
To believe that Governing Religious bodies and Scientific community are not infuenced by the almighty dollar would also be naive. The Church and Government bend and break rules in order to gain power and position. Furthermore, there is not separation of Church and State in all governments of the world; so that is one area that isn't reconciled.
There is not one unifying religion, or one unifying political doctrine espousing what the scientific communitie's credos. And of course, many contemporary major religions are utterly opposed to both the underpinnings, methods and goals of science; i.e. cloning, embryonic stem cell research, etc.
Religion's nature and purpose are so diametrically opposed from sciences that it is hard to reconcile them. It is indeed a difficult marriage.
So much benevolence and malificence can come from both disciplines, it all comes down to the spirit of human kind to utilize both sciences for their best purposes, and to broker their beliefs in a peaceful and purposeful manner.
