I have researched that eternal question 'what happens when we die?' for several months now, via books on interlife regression, books by and about mediums and books on near death experiences. The most compelling 'evidence' in my opinion came from the books by live between life hypnotic regression, where the subject is taken right down to the ;theta' state of consiousness and is asked to begin describing what it was like when they took their last breath in their previous life. I have written a brief summary of my findings:
When the body dies, the soul can actually 'pop out' of the body before physical death to lessen the physical pain, which is of comfort for those suffering great pain or trauma, or even both. If the death is very violent (as in a soldier gets caught up in a massive, unsurvivable explosion and wasn't expecting it) then the soul might be caught unawares and the soul's energy would be very fragmented and in need of some extra TLC.
Now the soul is free of the body. Now what? If one is a young soul (has not had very many earthly incarnations) then the dying process is still relatively new and this might lead to momentary confusion and darkness. It will take a while for the mental vision of the soul to adjust to its new state. The young soul should feel a gentle pull away from Earth, however, if one desires, it is possible to ignore this pull and stay for the funeral and also to comfort loved ones if at all possible.
Newer souls find physical death harder and feel more attached to the earth and physical life than older souls. If the death was violent, or the person died very young, a soul might stay around a while longer, say 200 years or more. Time is always 'now' in the spirit world so this wouldn't seem that long to the soul. Eventually, the soul trackers would try to encourage the confused soul to return home, but there is no pressure and souls do have free will and can simply dig in their ghostly heels and refuse.
This may account for ghostly hauntings and sightings, and some vengeful souls may try to scare humans for fun.If we take it that the departed soul is now ready to move on, the darkness will shift to a lighter shade of grey and gradually get brighter, almost cloud like, and the magnetic pull will take the newly departed being along to the tunnel. There will of course be the light at the end which starts out very dim and gets brighter. The older the soul the quicker this transition is and less assistance is needed. Of course
