"I don't think you understand, Terrence," Andrew said as sat on his bed and looked at a picture of his fianc. "I can bring her back.
"But Andrew, you can't." Terrence looked him straight in the eye. "We have strict orders to follow. We can't let our private lives interfere with that."
Andrew buried his face in his hands. "I know. I know. But I don't think you understand how much I miss her."
"No. No, I don't Andrew. I can't begin to know what your are going through." Terrence said as he got up and sat next to Andrew on his bed. "But you can't bring her back."
"If we can stop 9-11, why can't I stop Colleen from getting killed in that car accident the August before 9-11? If we're successful, we're going to change the future anyways."
Terrence thought about what Andrew was saying. For almost a year, they trained side by side for this mission. For months, they memorized facts, locations and the faces of the terrorists. Tomorrow they would enter the time machine with two other recruits and begin their mission of traveling back in time to two months before Sept. 11, 2001; two months before planes slammed into the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and a field in Pennsylvania. Their mission was to try to stop the planes from being hijacked. Only today, it occurred to Andrew that he might also be able prevent his fianc from dying in a car accident that occurred in August 2001.
"Terrence, if we're successful, we will alter the paths of thousands of lives that were affected by 9-11. What's one more?"
"It's not in the plan, Andrew. What if we go to save her and it affects our ability to stop the terrorists?"
"It won't. It's only one day I need to be there. How could it possibly affect weeks in trying to stop the terrorists from going through with their plot?"
Terrence sighed and thought about what Andrew was saying. Would one day make a difference? The military had briefed them on the details of time travel. They debated whether they would actually go through with this mission even while they trained for it.
One of the recruits made a couple of test runs back in time and returned with a good report. He was able to stop a small robbery that was reported in the newspaper early in 2001. However, another test run to his hometown revealed that he traveled back independent of his own existence in 2001. While they were in 2001, there would actually be two of them - one from the future and the one living in that time period. The plan was to have the person from the past
