Novel excerpts: A second chance at love

Tonight was the big night. Jane was so excited she could hardly get ready. Nothing in her wardrobe seemed just right. Not only was Steve going to ask her to marry him, she was finally going to get rid of her troublesome virginity. Seemed that everyone else had taken care of that long ago. Everyone but her. She had this ridiculous idea that she'd like to be in love with the man she gave herself to. Old fashioned maybe, but she was determined. Nothing like killing two birds with one stone!

Smiling happily to herself as she pulled on her clothes, she thought about the past 6 months of dating Steve. They were perfect for each other. He always knew the right things to say and do, her parents loved him and her friends had all fallen in love with him long ago. Well, all except her room mate Charlie. But then Charlie reserved judgment on pretty much everything, and he was always quick to point out when Jane was behaving a bit too impulsively.

"Going out with Steve again, hun?" Charlie asked from where he lounged on the couch with a bowl of popcorn and the remote.

"Yup" Jane finished applying her lipstick and looked critically in the mirror at her reflected image.

"You look great" Charlie assured her, glancing approvingly at Jane's sleek black slip dress, white pearls and pearl drop earrings. Her shoulder length hair was swept up in a flattering French twist, with little ringlets surrounding her face and neck. "You definitely have the figure to pull that dress off." he declared.

"You think so?" Jane looked pensive. "Steve told me the other day he thought I was gaining a little weight."

"What? Why would he say such a thing?" Charlie shook his head in disbelief. "You're no size two, but you're definitely not fat!"

"I guess" Jane still didn't sound sure, but seemed satisfied with the image of sophisticated womanhood looking back at her.

Throwing a yellow and red silk scarf backwards over her shoulder she decided she didn't need the pearls after all, and took them off. There, she looked exactly how she wanted to look for the most important evening of her life. The evening when she would become engaged to Mr. Stephen Martenelli. "Are you sure he's going to ask you tonight?" Charlie asked again, trying to bring her down to earth.

"Of course." Jane tried to sound more positive than she felt. "Why else would he tell me he had something important to discuss with me?"

Charlie shook his head again and snuggled into the afghan on the couch. "I just don't trust him"
