One key to operating a successful business is maintaining company morale. A company's overall morale must be medium to high. Employees working at that company must realize their work output is vital to a business's survival. Sometimes, there is more to a job than receiving a weekly or bi-weekly pay check. Employees can get lost in every day shuffle. Their achievements can often go ignored, while their deficiences become spotlighted. There are always going to be challenges to do quality work. Part of accomplishing that involves keeping employees grounded with positive reinforcement and motivation. Here are some tips to motivate workers properly.
RECOGNIZE WHEN SOMEONE DOES AN EXCELLENT JOB
In some cases, what an employee needs a pat on the back. For example, servers/waiters take care of difficult customers. Some customers are fussy, needy, picky, angry and wishy-washy. Others are irritated and impatient. However, they all have to be waited on and treated as gold. When an unsatisfied customer is finally satisfied, that satisfied customer tells their friends. Their friends come to dine and leave satisfied, and then tell their friends. Satisfaction equals customer traffic. Customer traffic equals income for the restaurant. When servers/waiters deliver on increased clientel, they deserve to be congratulated.
The same goes when a salesman nails a big sell. The same goes when a realtor sells a high-end property. Recognizing an employee's effort makes them want to do that over and over again. Appreciation equals productivity. Doing good business thrives on staying positive.
MOTIVATE SLACKERS TO BE PART OF THE TEAM
Slackers are the drainers of a team's life-blood. They slack off. They joke around. They deter from completing the task at hand. Should you fire slackers? If they become a problem, you should. But, not all slackers are business "cancers". Sometimes, the laid-back employees are valuable assets.
Slackers alleviate the pressures at work. A business cannot run like an army boot camp. Employers should never shout at their employees' faces, curse them out or emotionally wreck them. In addition, employees shouldn't be humiliated or chastised in front of their peers. Those actions produce negative results.
For positive results, pair slackers with enthusiastic workers. The "ying and yang" effect can mold into a productive team. Slackers have personalities too. Also, they can be convinced that they're valued as well. Coming to work on time is being dependable. Helping others and staying later are qualities any worker should have. It doesn't matter how many tasks one person accomplishes in an hour. The only thing that matters is doing the job right.
DO REGULAR PERFORMANCE EVALUATIONS
Workers want to know where they stand. They need to know if they're doing their job right. Six-month evaluations are important to keep employees focused and on edge a little bit. Evaluations should include raises or promotions. Employees have to know they're working for something more. Motivated employees put out maximum effort.
