Poetry: Valentine's Day

by Alexander Sarmiento

Created on: June 13, 2009

I Was Only Trying to Be Nice

Velvety chocolates from Belgium

And proud roses with baby's breath

Light up the night on St. Valentine's

Eventually, the petals wilt and drop

Nasty and stale become the candies

The romance of the day fades away

I know not what it's like to get flowers

Nor do I have the pleasure of a box of confection

Every Valentine's Day brings me no joy

Sadness instead.

Do you remember when you were in school

And your classes had informal parties that day?

You brought Valentines for your classmates

Boys and girls - nothing scandalous.

Unfortunately, one time, I personalized them and

Like the stupid nerd I was, I got them mixed up

"Loser", they said, not just because I mixed them up

Sadly, my personalizing those cheap

Hallmark Valentines was not allowed that day!

I was only trying to be nice!

To this day, I don't celebrate St. Valentine's Day.
