How to handle potty training while out

Wouldn't it be great if the world would stop revolving while you potty trained your child? You could just stay in the comfort of your own home while your child learns to use the potty, and you wouldn't have to worry about things like going out to dinner with friends, getting the grocery shopping done or even going to the doctor's office? You'd have all you need right at your fingertips while your child learns. Unfortunately, staying home until your child has learned to use the potty is pretty near impossible. All parents must learn to bridge the gap between potty training in the home and managing potty training while they're out. Here are a few do's and don't's to guide you through the process.

DO have your child go to the bathroom before you head out. An empty bladder gives you more time until they have to go to the bathroom again.

DO pack extra underwear or pull-ups, wet wipes and a couple of changes of clothing. If your child has an accident you'll be prepared for it. Also pack a couple plastic bags for putting soiled clothing in.

DO ask your child if they have to go to the bathroom each time one becomes available while you're out. Some times kids get so wrapped up in the moment they don't react to their urge to go to the bathroom.

DON'T make a huge fuss if your child has an accident. This is a sure fire way to cause them embarrassment, and snuff out their desire to try.

DO tell them how proud you are of them for trying. Even if they don't quite make it to the potty, it's important to tell them how proud you are that they tried.

DO bring along a portable potty seat. A collapsible one is ideal. Many children are afraid of public bathrooms for two reasons. The environment is new to them, and the room echo's which amplifies any noise they hear in there. The portable potty seat will be familiar to them which may take away some of their apprehension. And, as far as that scary flush at the end, let them go out of the stall before you flush; it's not nearly as loud.

DO let others you're with know that your child is potty training, and that you may have to make frequent stops. If you're at another person's home ask where the bathroom is just in case you need to find it in a hurry. Be sure to show your child where it is too. Others adults can also encourage your child to go potty when they need to.

DON'T cut your adventure short if there's an accident. Your child may feel as if they've ruined things and their self-esteem may be damaged. Instead, carry on with what you're doing, and don't make a big issue out of any accidents they may have.

DON'T worry about what others think when there's and accident. Either they've never had to potty train a child before, and therefore have no grounds to judge, or they are all to familiar with what you and your child are going through and are completely understanding of the situation.

Being away from home during the potty training stage may be a bit scary. But, it doesn't have to be the nightmare it appears to be. Be prepared, be patient, and be encouraging, and your child will have potty training mastered before you know it.
