For most parents there comes a time when they need to call on the services of a babysitter. Finding someone that you're comfortable with to care for your children isn't always an easy. Considering the importance of making a wise choice, there are a few qualities a parent should look for in a babysitter when they're on the hunt for one. The easiest way to do this is to invite a potential babysitter over to your home, or meet them somewhere else, on a few different occasions before you actually entrust the wellbeing of your child into their hands.

Observe how they interact with your child and how your child interacts with them. Look at the subtle things like body language, and tone of voice. Do they seem to know what to do or not to do in a give situation? Is their cell phone ringing constantly, and do they seem more concerned with answering it than they do with watching your child?

Are they crafty? Most crafty people have great imaginations which means they will be more able to engage your child in activities. Children thrive in an environment where they are allowed to create and explore. A babysitter who enjoys creativity is a good fit.

Do they have a sense of humor? Children are probably the funniest things on the planet. Well, maybe not when they're sick or mad, but as a rule, children are generally high-spirited and full of crazy antics that make people laugh. If the babysitter has a good sense of humor they'll probably bond with your child quite easily.

Do the seem mature enough? You know just how much responsibility goes into tending to a child. Does the babysitter appear to understand this responsibility?

Can they cook? They don't need to be able to prepare a seven course meal, but knowing how to cook without the use of a microwave is a definite plus.

Are they neat and organized? Give them a prepackaged snack and see if the wrapper ends up on the ground or in the trash can. If they're at you house do they hang their coat up or just toss it on the couch?

Do they communicate well with your child? Do they understand what your child is saying? Do they appear interested in getting to know your child? In other words, do they pay more attention to you and what you're doing than to your child and what he or she is doing?

Finally, are they a push over? The last thing you want is a babysitter who doesn't have the backbone to make sure your child adheres to your rules. If you see your child doing something you don't want them doing, ask the babysitter to intervene for you. Watch their technique and see if they are in control or if your child is.

Personal observation is no guarantee you'll find a good babysitter. It is, however, the affective of trying to find the best one you can.
