The television show "Jericho" aired on CBS for two seasons and depicted the struggle of a small town in Kansas to survive a massive terrorist attack that resulted in the destruction of 23 U.S. cities due to nuclear explosions.
There are multiple layers and story-lines within the television show that kept the viewers on the edge of their seats for one hour every week. There were many similarities to the show with the present situation in Iraq and the political views of the writers, producers, and actors were often subtly incorporated into the episodes.
With that said there has been a lot of people spending an enormous amount of time studying "Jericho" from a strategic and tactical military planning perspective as to how the United States would actually respond if such an event happened. These individuals naturally assume that such a situation as one depicted in the show "Jericho" could actually happen to the United States in the future and based on that assumption come up with many theories and hypotheses on if the show accurately depicts what would happen if an event of this magnitude actually occurred.
Being an avid fan of the show and a member of the United States military I have a unique perspective on what might actually occur in the future of the United States which I will try to lay down in this article.
-Strategic Location of the United States-
The location of the United States is a prime factor that has allowed us to remain a nation relatively free of invasion for most of our existence. The natural buffers of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans make it extremely hard for our nation's enemies to get within striking distance of our shores without being detected, so the next avenue of approach, the North or South is where most actually fear an invasion coming in. The North is protected by the Canadians which are some of our strongest allies, which leaves our weakest border to the South with Mexico.
Luckily this border with Mexico is mostly the Rio Grande which provides us with a strategic advantage and the rest is bordered by inhospitable deserts that would make any invasion bog down in the sand.
Not to mention the border states are some of the most patriotic states in the country and the citizens of the states would do just about anything to protect their land from encroaching invaders. With Texas being major military hub in the south, a concentrated and well-organized defense could be mounted within minutes of an invasion and halted rather quickly.
