Each person who makes the decision to volunteer does it for different reasons. For some, this is a great way to give back to their communities, while for others, it's a great way to get to know people in their community. Volunteering takes on a variety of forms - some volunteer when their children are in school, others get involved with their local Lions Clubs or other civic organizations, others like to volunteer their time on an "as needed" basis. Most of us are aware of the potential networking opportunities involved in volunteering and what that can mean in terms of finding a

paying job. There are however, other ways that volunteering your time eventually pays off. Let's look at some of them:

Recognition - If you are a person who enjoys recognition, then volunteering is often a way to get that recognition. Most community service groups offer some incentive for participating in their activities. This is a great morale-booster and is likely to keep people excited and involved. When you get involved in a service project, your name (and that of your company) becomes recognized by others in your community.

Leadership - Few of us feel that we have all of the leadership skills that we need. Volunteering your time gives you the opportunity to hone your leadership skills in a variety of ways. If you want to learn more about managing a project, managing people or public speaking, volunteering your time can pay off by helping you develop these skills.

Personal Growth - For those who are looking for personal growth opportunities, volunteering your time can pay off. You will not only be serving your community and those who are in need, but you'll also likely develop life-long friendships with those who share your vision. There are thousands of opportunities for you to grow personally in a volunteer role. This personal can pay off in both your personal and professional life.

While most of us volunteer our time for the personal satisfaction of helping others, there are significant benefits to volunteering your time. If you are committed to a project you tend to be better focused, better organized and you become a more rounded person overall. Stop and consider the various ways you can assist those who are less fortunate than you. When you give of yourself through a commitment of time, energy and emotion, your volunteering eventually pays off by giving you a deep sense of satisfaction. Get involved, stay involved, make a difference in your community.
