One ordinary evening, as the sun was going down,
Two men sat on a bus bench on the western side of town.
A gentle, aging fellow with a Bible in his hands
Read silently with reverence all the ancient book's commands.
The younger man looked over, saw the book, and rolled his eyes;
And then he spoke up angrily, to the older man's surprise:
"Why trust this myth of Jesus?" he asked the older man.
"Why not leave Him out of it, and do the best you can?
"Religion's for the weak of mind...for those who cannot think;
It takes the place of critical thought and causes brains to shrink.
"Man is really good at heart; we just need ample time;
We'll build our 'Heaven' here on earth, and then we'll be just fine.
"We'll unleash all the power that our potent minds contain;
And we'll clean up society from every spot and stain.
"We can't look to the churches, no, they've caused more war than peace;
Our God-less view will see us through and give life its new lease.
"We need not speak of 'saviors'; we can save ourselves just fine;
We'll be the ones to outlaw guns and thus prevent all crime.
"Our bleeding hearts will bring about the world of which we've dreamed:
With funded programs and some care, this world can be redeemed.
"Reward the lazy, first of all; be sure the rich to blame;
With shrewdly levied taxes, render all incomes the same.
"We'll sue big corporations, then, whose foods just make us fat;
We'll even tax the Internet, and get more funds from that!
"We'll separate the churches from the state in everything:
First, we'll say that while in church, they'll still be free to sing.
"However, this must never spill into the public square;
Just keep your faith behind those walls and do your 'God' thing there.
"Rappers, crooks, and liberal press must exercise free speech;
But pastors, priests, and rabbis? They must find this out of reach.
"Besides, we cannot tolerate your narrow-minded ilk;
We'll aim to keep you satisfied with words as smooth as silk.
"Just give us all the power, and we'll use it all for good;
We'll end the scourge of poverty and save each neighborhood.
"We'll go to those poor inmates who just need a listening ear;
Our plan will be to set them free, yet never live in fear.
"We'll banish all religion from the classrooms and the jails;
In doing so, we'll guarantee progressive thought prevails.
"Enough with flunking children just because they cannot read;
Just push them through without the skills the prudes all say they need.
"We'll teach the children they were monkeys
