What is an umbrella stroller?

by Virginia L. Allen

Created on: June 12, 2009

By manufacturers definition, an umbrella stroller is lightweight and folds easily, making it ideal for travel and around-town transport. Probably one of the best inventions for busy moms and dads, these light weight, easy to fold and stash away baby accessories, are great for the parent on the go.

Unlike the traditional stroller that is often large and bulky, umbrella strollers provide parents with an easily accessible mode of toddler transportation, for those quick trips to the store, or those daily walks to the park.

Quick to fold and unfold; easy to maneuver; and possessing the ability to fit through small spaces; umbrella strollers now come in a variety of colors and designs. Unlike the traditional umbrella strollers of the past, you can even find two-seater varieties.

Unfortunately, even with all the benefits umbrella strollers have to offer, they do however posses several inconveniences.

1.) Lack of suitable back support.

2.) Limited weight restrictions.

3.) Lack of protection.

* Little To No Back Support.

Due to it's design, umbrella strollers are often manufactured with little to no back support for your toddler. It is for this reason, that umbrella strollers are not suitable for infants or small children lacking the ability to support their heads and backs on their own. Keeping this in mind, even for those with the ability to support their heads and backs on their own, long term use may not be the best choice for your precious cargo.

* Limited Weight Restrictions.

In addition to the lack of back support, umbrella strollers are limited in their weight restrictions. Unlike their sturdier stroller cousins, umbrella strollers are not able to support as much weight as their larger counterparts.

* Little To No Protection.

Unlike the amount of protection from the elements (such as the sun and rain via the sun visor), or the protection your child experiences from a physical standpoint (due to the structure and make of the sturdier version), umbrella strollers; due to their structure; do not offer such protection devises. Irregardless of these restrictions, the convenience of an umbrella stroller truly outweigh the cons of owning one.

Umbrella strollers are truly a great invention. Possessing the ability to provide parents with countless hours of hands-free and worry-free freedom, it's a great accessory for a busy day around town.

Perfect for quick trips to the store, leisurely walks around the neighborhood, and short term daily use, umbrella strollers are a great baby accessory for parents and children alike.
