Places to volunteer in Austin, TX

by Isabelle Esteves

January is Poverty Awareness Month in Austin, Texas. Poverty has many faces and if you would like to help someone in need in Austin,  there are many organizations who would be delighted to  take advantage of your generosity. It doesn't matter if you have one hour to donate or many hours, there are a variety of opportunities for you to give your time and your talent to help those who are less fortunate than you are.

Meals on Wheels and More

When people are shut in and unable to cook for themselves, they don't have to worry. Meals on Wheels will bring a nutritious meal to their door. In Austin alone,  over 1800 meals are delivered every day. This program has a lot more to it than just Meals on Wheels. They need volunteers to go grocery shopping for those who can't go for themselves, take someone in need to their medical appointments or just visit a shut in to provide them with company. Loneliness is one of the most devastating things for the elderly and shut-ins. If you have a few hours to give, Meals on Wheels and More has a job for you. Even if you can't get out yourself,  you can use your phone to keep in touch with some who is alone.

Opportunities are available for one hour per month and but they prefer more. Give them a call; you will be glad you did.

Town Lake Animal Shelter

Town Lake Animal Shelter is the largest animal shelter in central Texas.  Over 23,000 animal pass through here every year. With that many animals,  a lot of help is needed and of course many of the helpers need to be volunteers. Do you have a way with animals? Even if you don't like animals, you can help by working in the office or by  keeping the grounds neat.

If you like working with animals, there are plenty of opportunities for hands on contact. Town Lake is looking for adult as well as children to help out. Children can help out here but must be accompanied by an adult. If you have time to give on a regular basis,  give them a call and take the  opportunity to make a difference in the life of one of our four legged friends.

Hospice of Austin

There are many ways that you can help at the Hospice of Austin. One skill that is very much in demand is to be a good listener. Both the patients and the family members may need someone to talk to. Listening is all that is required.

There are many skills that are in demand at Hospice. Are you handy with a hammer, you can help families to build a handicap ramp. Are you good with a computer? Office help is always needed. Just by being there you can help, this allows family members to leave for a short time and take care of their own business.

Twice a year, Hospice of Austin offers training. All they ask is that you commit for at least one year of volunteer work. Spanish speaking volunteers are always in demand.

If you are looking for a way to give back to your community, in Austin these are just a few of the many opportunities available to you. Why not chose one of these or one of the many others who are in need of your help.
