Determining when your child is ready for potty training

then this is also a sign they may be ready.

Leading you towards the toilet, following siblings or other family members, or going towards the potty when they feel they need to go are all great signs you may need to act upon.

ABILITY TO CONCENTRATE AND LISTEN

Does your toddler have the ability to listen and react to questions or tasks you ask them to do? When their cognitive skills have improved, a toddler will be able to react to simple tasks, have the ability to listen, sit quietly for short periods of time and concentrate when they are doing it. If your toddler is still easily distracted, then potty training may need to be done later down the track.

TENTATIVE STEPS

When you first begin to recognize that your child is showing all of the above signs for potty readiness, this is the time when the diaper gets left off and potty training begins. If your toddler is having accidents repeatedly and not showing any interest in going to the potty, and this behavior continues for longer than a week without any improvement, then it may be too soon. In this case, reserve the potty training for a couple of months later.

Accidents will happen, remember this. But if the accidents are only few and far between and overall the potty or toilet is being used successfully, then your toddler is doing great.

TODDLER LOVES THEIR UNDERWEAR

When your toddler loves to wear their underwear and can wear it without removing it, or making a mess in it, then this is also a great sign that their potty training is going well.

Recognizing the signs that a toddler is ready for potty training is essential to making this transition and important milestone in your toddler's life successful. Remaining calm and ensuring you are encouraging throughout this process will make it one that is relatively quick and successful.
