Have you ever gone fishing and had a great day, that seemed like every time you put your line in the water you had a bite? Better yet have you ever had a day where you couldn't catch a thing, not even a baby fish, yet you could see fish everywhere? Have you ever wondered why some days you do great and other days you can't catch any kind of fish? Have you ever wondered, "what makes fish bite"? This is a question that anglers have wondered for years. Some have figured out many different secrets that make their targeted species bite and others are still scratching their heads wondering. The plain simple truth is there are many factors that make fish bite. There is no one specific reason that is responsible for why a fish does or doesn't bite, but many working together most of the time. Here we can explore some factors that make fish bite and some forces that make them not bite. When it comes to fish biting the currents, tides, weather, water conditions, time of day, the moon and your choice of bait all effect if a fish will bite or not.
Water Conditions
Fish tend to bite better where there is a current in the water. For example, on out going tide many species of fish wait for crabs and other species of fish to return to the ocean. This is when they eat and get into a frenzy biting almost ant type of bait they are use to and even some they aren't. In rivers, streams, and canals that have a moving current, whether it be a natural downward flow of the water or man made by locks being opened, fish and other creatures are almost always moving with the current. This also makes fish bite. Anywhere there is a curent fish know that food is to be found.
The Bait
The bait is the one thing that you can use where you can actually influence a fish to bite. The more attractive the bait, the more chance you have of making the fish bite. Think about this. If someone offered you a plate of refried beans with nothing else, would you eat it? Now if someone offered you a plate with a Sirloin steak with a bake potato, would you eat it? The bait should look real and be appetizing to the fish. It is usually best to use a bait that is actually part of the targeted species natural diet. The more familiar the fish is with the bait, the better chance that they will bite it. With some fish putting a bright red or pink jig head on or beads will create a flashiness that will attract a fish. Some lures are designed to make noise which arouse the curiousity of fish and make them bite.
