How to find the right niche for your writing

Discovering some small corner of the internet that is yet unexplored or creating a story that is different and yet explores universal themes is not as easy as it sounds, and it doesn't sound all that easy, but it doesn't have to be impossible either. There are still plenty of ideas out there and those who say now that there is nothing new are just as wrong as the people who said that computers would never catch on.

The first thing you must do when considering any writing is look at what you love. Writing about something you don't care about, no matter how important the subject or valuable the information isn't going to work in the long run. People can sense when a writer is going through the motions. Look for ideas that you are interested in on the internet. If you can't find anything on it there is a good chance that others are looking for it as well.

Second, you must understand that niche are by definition small. Broad subjects are likely to already be covered, so don't start a blog about books, start one about your favorite author or even your favorite book. If you write a story stick with a single idea and examine it fully. Throwing in too many ideas, characters and themes makes it all have less time and the story feel muddied and is simply far harder to write.

Specifics are valuable. There are plenty of places where you can find the basics of a subject, even a niche subject, the problem is that anyone who really cares about the niche already knows the basics. Minutia is only minutia if you don't care when you care about the subject it becomes interesting tidbits of information.

Becoming an expert is the key to creating your niche. Become the person that everyone comes to for information on a specific subject and it won't matter how minor that subject is and the good news is with enough interest anyone can become an expert on a niche subject.

The key to understanding how to create a good niche is to understand that there is no subject too small or seemingly unimportant. Trust yourself enough to know that if you find it interesting enough to write about others will want to read about it. Being number one in a less common search is more valuable than being number 50 in a common search.

With the internet so crowded it is far more likely that you will make an impact on the internet by being specific than being broad so find something that you really care about, get a laser focus and become the world's greatest expert on one tiny subject.
