When people hear the phrase "beach towns in Mexico" or even "beaches in Mexico" they think of places such as Cancun, Acapalco, or Puerto Vallarta. While these beaches are popular and full of beach fun, there are lesser known beaches. Although these less popular beaches may not have the advantage of being highly recognizable or tons of tourists being loud and obnoxious, they can provide a range of different atmospheres, some full of locality and culture and others full of tranquility and peacefulness.
The first of the lesser known beaches is Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca. In fact, the words "puerto escondido" literally means "hidden port." For quite a while this city was comprised of remote villagers whom had little contact with the rest of the world. They exported coffee and fished. In 1960, a highway was built along the Pacific Coast which ran right by Puerto Escondido. After that it become slightly more popular as surfers, hikers, and backpackers were drawn to the beautiful sights of the city. Although Puerto Escondido is nowhere near as remote as it once was, it is still off the radar and a great getaway for someone looking to have a culturally rich and authentic experience.EW56Bhttp://en.wiki pedia.org/wiki/Ensenada,_Baja_ CaliforniaWH6PDZ6EFP
Another lesser known beach is Ixatapa, Guerrero. While it is considered a beach resort town, its current population is only about 6,400. Ixatapa was originally a coconut plantation and mangrove estuary, but in the 1970's, the government turned it into a beach resort. Although Ixatapa is considered a beach resort, they have over 5,000 hotel rooms, but only 6,400 people that live in the city. So most of the time, it is a relatively empty town. They also have a Magic World water park. This beach city would provide a much different envrionment than the aforementioned Puerto Escondido. The setting of Ixatapa is much more touristy and would perhaps provide a nice place to relax for someone who is trying to go on vacation and not immerse themselves in culture.
I have only addressed a few of the many lesser beach cities in the great country of Mexico. While there are many great places for tourism, sunbathing, and margaritas, visiting a country to learn about its culture and history can be a great experience as well. For someone who does not want to run into Spring Breakers or annoying, drunk, college kids, these towns may offer a great alternative.
And yet another beach that is not so popular is Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo,
