Art collecting means different things to different people. Like some other hobbies, it can be as serious as you want it to be. Some people make it a part-time job, officially or not, and others only dabble in it to decorate their homes. For a beginner, the sheer number of approaches to art collecting can be overwhelming.
Here are four tips to help you get the most out of your hobby:
1. Know why you're buying.
Some people rely on others to make their buying decisions. If they see someone buying something similar, they'll purchase a piece. If someone tells them to buy it, or that it's trendy, they'll purchase the piece. This is not a good way to go about collecting art. You'll rack up a collection of art that you don't connect with or value, or maybe even strongly dislike.
Instead, look for pieces of art that you like. It really is that simple! Don't wait for others' approval. Instead, watch for pieces that move you, that you think would fit nicely in a particular spot or room, and are fresh and exciting to you. In the end, you're the one who will be viewing the art on a daily basis, so choosing a piece you like is very important.
2. Visit art galleries.
When you're new to art collecting, another good thing to do is to visit many art galleries. Not only will you build your knowledge about art and collecting it, but you can also experience different kinds of art and examine details of prestigious art collections. You might even get some ideas
3. Get in the loop.
The art galleries that you visit will often have some kind of mailing list to update their frequent customers and interested parties on happenings in the art community, new shows and events, and openings. You'll gain more exposure to the art industry and sometimes find good deals.
4. Local talent is priceless.
Even if you don't have many art galleries in your area, there might be non-profit art centers, art museums, or other fairs and showings. Try to frequent local events and you'll become well-known and -liked by the artists in your area. You can sometimes find masterpieces for very low prices that will add a lot of value to your collection. The curators of these local events sometimes hold free or low-cost lectures where you can learn more about art or see new pieces.
Keep these basic tips in mind as you begin collecting art, and you'll enjoy the rewards of this interesting hobby.
