The number one disadvantage of owning a pet bird is that they will tie you down, so if you have your heart set on traveling; you won't because you'll be thinking about who you would be able to find that will take as good a care of them, as you do and that is nearly impossible. In order for this to happen, you actually have to train someone else, setting down the rules as you go and giving them a to do list. Those that have an RV make allowances if they don't have too many birds and take the birds along. In this way, they know they will receive the love and attention they need and nutrition.
Another con to having a pet bird is the time factor they take from your life. To have a good bird, you need to train it and this means spending plenty of time to bond with them and to communicate. Any animal is only as good as the master spends with it and takes the time to train him. No one likes a dog that jumps up the minute their friend walks into the house or a bird that lunges to bite. These are prime examples of why they need to be trained. If your bird isn't able to spend the time he cherishes with you, he could get bored, angry and develop some bad habits such as screeching to get your attention or picking his feathers. In his world, any attention from you is better than no attention.
Talking about boredom, you will have to either make them non toxic safe toys all of the time or buy them at least once or twice a month to have them chopped up and destroyed by your birds. Birds have beaks that are made to peel, split and chop things into bits better than your paper shredder.
Birds deserve empathy too. To own a bird is to try to understand a critter that has wings and yet is confined in a cage and unable to fly. They were created to fly and to own one is to give them enough love and understanding to try to make their lives as close to how they would live in the wild as possible. This means a huge flight aviary, so they can exercise their breast bones through their wings. Some would definitely call this an advantage, but in truth; it would be asking you how much does their happiness mean to you? Therefore, owning a bird can be costly if you care about giving them the best possible life they can have with you. Bird owners learn about the special mesh wiring that isn't toxic to their birds. When you have birds, you have to think about everything that you have and how it would affect them. For example the product of Teflon is a real killer to your pet birds. Most coffee
