"The only yardstick for success our society has is being a champion. No one remembers anything else." -John Madden
Madden '06 for Xbox 360 is a stripped-down but visually entrancing re-make from the previous Xbox version onto the Xbox 360 console. The result is a gorgeously represented visual display, and easier controls with less options in franchise mod. First off, a new kicking system was installed. A large arrow must be set to aim over the kick, followed by two button hammers. One of the buttons sets the accuracy, and the other power. The system works quite well, and makes kicking more realistic.
Another addition to the pallet is the Xbox Live gaming. Online play offers unique player-to-player matches. Although there is only one option for online play, it offers an enjoyable environment and interesting matches. The graphics in Madden '06 for the 360 is simply gorgeous. The faces look realistic, and the eyes even seem to have a glimmer. The re-created game menu is smooth and eye-catching. A redesigned play calling system offers ease when choosing plays. The replay system is in-depth and very interesting. If you want to zoom in on a particular play, you can get up-close and personal. There are some technical issues in collisions, as some aren't synchronized or coordinated.
If you enjoy John Madden and Al Michael's comments, you will be let down with this game as it is void of their play-by-play action. However, some people will be enthusiastic about this change. Calling audibles is much easier thanks to the sleek design of the 360 controllers. The game is stripped down of some aspects: there is no owner's mode or training camp. In franchise mode, there aren't unique spring training options such as goals, morale, and the details of team management. It is also free of mini-camp. The only modes left are a watered-down franchise mode, and the ability to play online via Live.
Overall, Madden '06 for Xbox 360 is a stripped down, but visually enhanced version of it's older-console successor. If you are looking for visually captivating football gaming, this would be the way to go (if you don't include the newer versions of the Madden games.) If, however, you want interesting options for game modes such as in franchise mode, you will be let down with this game. This version has it's ups and downs, but overall will appeal to the hard-core in-game football gamers.
