help her, please. "Of course, of course," said Rose's mother, "my name is Mrs. Edith Priscilla Pequant Packracker and I am interested in a pair of your growing shoes for my six year old daughter, Rose. Now, don't get me wrong, but these shoes must make my daughter stand at least six inches taller or more before I will be completely satisfied. We have the most beautiful, wondrous, blue haired daughter who must be taller than her cousin Mary or she'll .... I just don't know what she will do."
Mrs. Henrietta Osmosis Singular Smit drew herself up to her full height of two and one half feet and said, "ah hah, I see. I believe I have just the thing you need, just let me go into the back room for a moment." This time alone gave Mrs. Packracker a chance to look around the store. She had never seen such shoes as these before. Every color in the rainbow was on display and each shoe was as different from the one beside it as possible. There were women's and men's styles as well as shoes for little boys and girls. There were also shoes that had three shoes to a pair or should she say trio. Her eyes couldn't take it all in before Mrs. Smit emerged from the back room and acclaimed quite loudly that she had exactly what she needed.
"Mrs. Packracker, I believe these shoes will do quite nicely for your daughter Rose," she said. "But, I must warn you that these shoes have a mind of their own and will not take kindly to fickleness of any kind. You see, they are magical and once worn will do their very best to conform to the wishes of the wearer, - within reason." Well, Rose's mother knew that 'reason' was certainly not her daughter's middle name, but maybe just maybe everything would be fine. She took the little blue, orange, green and red striped shoes from Mrs. Smit and said, "these shoes are certainly colorful and they have my daughter's favorite color red in them, but I don't see how they can possibly add six inches or more to her height, for the heel doesn't look to be more than an inch and a half."
"That," said Mrs. Smit "is where the magic comes in. For you see, when the wearer puts these shoes on, they will grow to the height wished. But again, I must warn you that they do not take kindly to fickleness and the wearer must be careful in their wishing."
Mrs. Edith Priscilla Pequant Packracker took the shoes from Mrs. Smit and said,
