Favorite websites, well that's kind of vague, don't you think so? I guess judging one's favorite depends upon the category of favoritism one chooses from. Depending mostly on personal and professional interests of people, there can be numerous sites one could choose from. Talking about my favorite sites, I would probably rank them according to their overall contribution towards the development of the internet and my own skills.
Being a programmer it is absolutely essential that I spend some amount of my time devoted toward browsing various websites in order to learn about new technological advancements in my chosen field. The vicious cycle of learning and re-learning is part and parcel of my profession.
Lets take a Top 5 count down of my favorite websites and discuss some of their features:-
5) Cybersansar.com
This site is mostly targeted towards the Nepali population around the globe. Although this site provides hardly any features other than skimpily clad models and some news this site had pioneered web culture and the development of website in my country. Prior to this website people mostly just checked their mails and read some news in either Yahoo or Hotmail.
4) Nettuts.com
Brilliant site offering all kinds of tutorials which is very very easy to learn. Tutorials mostly consist of stuff related to web design, web development and setting up computer related environments. This site also offers awesome freebies and ample tips of matters concerning web professionals and laymen alike.
3) Dzone.com
If you're into IT and you haven't heard of this site then you are bullshitting yourself. Much like Digg.com this site offers new, articles, tutorials and other event information from other sites according to the number of votes they get. The ones with the most votes get ranked the most in that period of time. Other than these articles dZone also offers Reference cards which is a major bonus for us developers.
2) Facebook.com
Facebook.com is a such a wonderfully user friendly site to use. Good UI design with clever use of AJAX and social networking features are all A grade. The Facebook API is also well built and since it offers its API services in so many different programming languages no one has to go hungry. Facebook has revolutionized the way we communicate. Facebook may not be the first of its kind but currently it is the best. Facebook is why I love the internet and all the people using it.
1) Google.com
Google is god, Google is great. Google is what Microsoft was 5-10 years back. It's the company that churns out innovative, creative, people-friendly ideas and brings them to life. The search results this humbly website provides are 99% relevant and I don't know if I would've been where I am today if it wasn't for Google.
Id love to see some other company give Google a run for its money, but I don't think its going to happen in the near future. Google has everything that's online. Gmail, Google Earth, Maps, Docs, Orkut, Calender, Chat, Blog, Mars, Space, Google App Engine and many more. It seems that the word Google is almost synonymous with the internet. Some may disagree but this is my opinion. Without Google most internet technologies we know today may not have existed.
