How to remember your dad on Father's day

The best gifts for dad are those which touch his heart. Dad bears that title but he's a man with emotional needs whether he admits it or not. Dads give constantly by both nature and the responsibilities of the job but are often relegated to the back seat by the selfish nature of children. A tie; a belt; even a dinner outing all fulfill the basic requirements of remembrance on Fathers Day but unless they are given with a personal touch, they mean little and are soon forgotten. Attach the tie to something of real meaning; something personal to him.

Tokens reminding dad of a special time shared are usually a good idea. A begrimed golf ball from a memorable outing; a fishing lure to replace one lost in combat; these are gifts of the heart which raise pleasant memory. Choose carefully, however, as some memories are better left unstirred. If dad was humiliated by a poor performance on the links he will be unlikely to thank you for resurrecting the performance even if YOU enjoyed YOUR day.

Play to dads longings a bit. If, for instance dad gave up flying small aircraft so his family could eat regularly, schedule a "refresher flight" with an instructor and let dad feel the wind under his wings again. Our grown children did this for their father and it touched a deeply felt longing he hardly knew he still had. It was a memorable and greatly enjoyed Fathers Day by all. Seeking a little covert information about times past or old hobbies can give dad a gift beyond compare.

Gifts of time are appreciated. What can children of any age do for or with their dad? Whether its help with yard work so dad can watch the game or a camping trip with the stinkbugs of the desert, a gift of time should be something dad enjoys. Sometimes children even surprise themselves and learn to love a dreaded activity because they shared it with someone special who loves it. Surprise dad with a planned activity or gift him a "ticket" to plan the activity himself. If it is something dad would prefer to do on his own, like a quiet trip to a mountain stream to fish for a day, give him a certificate and the time off to go with a smile.

One thing young dads often do not get much of at home is peace and quiet. Moms can take the initiative here and spend time ahead coaching children to be quieter, more helpful and less argumentative on dads special day. A little concerted effort on moms part and dads castle can feel more pleasant to loll about and relax in. No one should have to walk on eggs all day but consideration for the comfort of a hard - working dad is an appreciated gift.

Fathers Day is more than the handing over of presents. It is a time to really let dad feel the appreciation and love one should be giving him every day. Gifts given should reflect your deepest feelings for the man in your life called Dad.
