I always like to watch movies about superheroes and mutants. Even though they are quite impossible to exist in the real world but hey, who knows? When I watch those kinds of movies, I always think that there must be something out there, somewhere. About Mutant Chronicles, the title was enough to attract me enough to watch it.

It is all the fault of human beings being too greedy. Taking everything of the Earth but giving nothing back. Thus, at the end of the Ice Age, The Machine came from the outer space with a mission to change Man into Mutant. However, Man was not to be defeated easily. A warrior named Neachdainn united the ancient tribes of Man and sealed The Machine beneath the Earth.
Everything was recorded in a book called the Chronicles.
In the year 2707, the world is ruled by four corporations. They fight each other and the seal is finally broken. The mutants rise from beneath and kill anyone in their way. After the killings, the mutants drag the dead back to the machine and the dead will be transformed into mutants by The Machine. Soon the words are out and the descendants of Neachdainn gather the best soldiers from each corporation in the hope to seal The Machine once again.
The Storyline
Mutant Chronicles could have been better. The beginning is always what I like about a movie. A story is told and you believe that something great is coming. It turns out that the mutants are just a bunch of infected. They multiply very quickly and soon the mutants are in the city to continue their killings.
The group of 'save the world heroes and heroines' carries a decoder and a connector but missing a key in a bid to turn off The Machine. Well, that was what I understood from the beginning. However, the group did not seal The Machine in the end but The Machine actually flew back to the outer space, leaving the Earth alone.
The Effects
Mutant Chronicles made some little effort in the guns and tanks used in the battle between the corporations to reflect the year 2707. Personally, 700 hundred years from now, I was expecting something more from the war. Something like Starship Troopers or maybe internet war. Strictly speaking, it is not about mutants but the infected. Yeah, just another infected movies.
In Mutant Chronicles, the most significant differences between human and mutants is the arm. Nothing else. In addition, the mutants are fast and at the same time slow, just like 28 Weeks Later.
Verdict
I thought mutants are supposed to be intelligent. They are not in Mutant Chronicles. I thought that I will be watching something like Starship Trooper plus X-Men. Maybe my expectation on Mutant Chronicles was too high. However, the whole package of Mutant Chronicles is just not right. The story matches the title but not the effects. As I mentioned, it was just like watching a movie about infections. Even then, the mutants are not worth watching at all. Gosh, are they mutants or the infected?
