You don't have to let the winter months and the accompanying bad weather throw you off course in maintaining your fitness. It might be a little more challenging motivating yourself to get out of bed in the morning to go for a jog, but in the end you know that it's worth it. You don't even have to go running to ensure that exercise remains a part of your routine during the winter months, but you do need to find an activity which you enjoy doing and stick with it. Exercise can obviously be used to control your weight which can prove useful during the winter months when Christmas comes around and you're given a plate full of turkey will all the trimmings.
If you are not the kind of person who particularly enjoys doing exercise you can stay motivated to continue by remembering how exercise burns off those extra calories, allowing you to indulge in extra cake and other goodies at Christmas and New Year. You want to look good for all those parties you will be going to, and so it might be somewhat of an inconvenience having to exercise in the cold, damp air, but it certainly has its benefits!
You might decide not to exercise outside, though, preferring to take your workout indoors during the winter months. Perhaps you are lucky enough to be in possession of gym membership already, or maybe you decide to join a gym as an early Christmas present to yourself. You don't have to spend a fortune to get a workout, though, as there are cheaper ways of getting fit without even leaving your own home. You could invest in a relatively cheap piece of exercise equipment such as a skipping rope, trampoline, or stepper, or you might want to buy a fitness DVD which you can follow.
If you prefer to continue exercising outdoors you should make an effort to wear suitable attire, as if you are walking, running, or cycling in shorts and a t-shirt you will be freezing, and it will be hard to motivate yourself to want to go outdoors to face the cold. You should also take into your consideration your foot wear, since if it is snowing and icy it might be a good idea to purchase some trainers or shoes which are designed to keep you on your feet.
Overall, though, whatever activities you choose to do during the winter months, from skiing outdoors to dancing around at home, you need to stay motivated to continue doing them so that you obtain all the possible benefits. Exercise can play an especially important part in keeping you sane during the winter months, as the darkness of winter and the tendency to virtually hibernate can leave some people feeling depressed. Exercise can help you counter any negative feelings, as well as strengthening your immune system and making your body better able to fight illness. You therefore shouldn't be put off from exercising just because it's winter as this is when you are most likely to benefit from it.
