Movie reviews: Obsessed

by Jennifer Spraggins

Created on: June 10, 2009

The movie, "Obsessed," starring Beyonce Knowles, Idris Elba, and Ali Larter, was a good yet predictable movie in areas. The movie describes the events that follow a man (Idris Elba), being promoted and receiving a new assistant (Ali Larter). The assistant becomes infatuated with the man, and begins to pursue him at the workplace. Soon this infatuation becomes an obsession (hence the name of the movie), and the assistant seeks to remove anybody that would impede on her "relationship" with the man. After a series of events, the wife (Beyonce Knowles) discovers that the assistant has been pursuing her husband after the assistant attempts suicide and her husband is blamed for it. Another series of events leads to the wife taking control of the situation and eventually killing the assistant.

The movie would have been much better if they had continued to focus on what the obsession was doing to the husband, who was primarily affected in the movie. It is no surprise (by Beyonce being one of the executive producers along with her father, Matthew Knowles) that the movie would turn into an independent woman saves the day. In the movie, the family installs a security system with two panic buttons, one at the front door and one in the master bedroom. Beyonce's character is by the front door when she hears the assistant in the master bedroom, and (predictably) follows the sound upstairs and is by the second panic button before she begins to fight her.

Now, it is understandable that someone would be mad after having their child taken while he or she is out and their husband's image is being ruined by lies. She is, however, given two opportunities to handle the situation realistically by pressing the panic button (which would have put the situation in the hands of police), and defending herself however necessary. This was an unnecessary attempt to incarnate the character that Beyonce tries to portray in her music, a strong woman that balances her sensivities with the ability to handle the daily struggles in life. Her character, however, is just as confusing as the female characters that is actually played out in Beyonce's music. Beyonce's character was just as naive in certain aspects of the movie, and suddenly becomes this death machine ready to take out anyone in her way. Though it was a good fight scene, it did not accentuate the story, and hence, strayed from the real story of a MAN trying to escape the traps of an obsessed woman.

If you're into Beyonce, or some of the other actors in this film, go see the movie. You'll still be entertained, and you'll still gain excitement from what is, for the most part, a good story.
